Ronald Lee Anderson (1929-2002)
Ronald Lee Anderson (OH 1929-2002) was a portrait painter of people, dogs and still-life, most associated with Litchfield, CT. Anderson was born in Ohio and studied art at The Schuler School of Arts in Baltimore, MD as well as the Pennsylvania School of Fine Art, Philadelphia, PA, studying under a former chief restorer of the Louvre, Paris.  After school, Anderson live in England and France.
When Anderson returned to the US, he proved himself at the early age of 25.  He was selected by American iconic artist, Andrew Wyeth, for inclusion in a Corcoran biennial exhibition in February of 1955.  The “fool-the-eye still life”, a centered silver hollowware, was chosen as part of the top 60+ paintings from the 1,247 submitted.  The canvas almost did not make the cut, having been placed first into Wyeth’s ‘maybe’ pile.
Anderson married Beverly Ann Herdling in 1957 and settled in Litchfield, CT.
He opened an art studio at 82 West Street, Litchfield, CT, advertising himself as “Ronald Lee Anderson : Academic, Realistic, portrait, and still life painter.”  The studio was a popular stop over the years on the famed “Litchfield, CT House Tours.”  The artist taught private students including Edith Branford (1962) and Helen Haddad (1966), as well as, fulfilled portrait commissions of people like Sir William Laurie Welsh, Nancy McCann, antiques dealer and friend, Thomas McBride, and fellow artist Bissell Phelps Smith.
Anderson was shown in Hartford, CT at the Wiley Gallery in the 1950s through the 1970s and the Potter & Slack Fine Art gallery in the 1990s.  He belong to the Torrington Artists group and showed with them throughout his life.  Anderson’s work was shown at the Maryland Institute, The Baltimore Musuem, Walters Art Gallery, The Corcoran Gallery (Washington, DC), The Pennsylvania Academy and Washington Depot (CT).
Of his work, one local art critic said:
“He has the high technique command and the temper that such a training would suggest.  For his meticulous craftsmanship, his lucidity and his taste are entirely in the best, cool tradition of French classical painting.”
